COLLEGE MEN : UA shoots down South Alabama

Published: Thursday, November 27, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

MOBILE, Ala. — Junior guard Stefan Welsh capped a career scoring game by hitting a threepoint basket with 2. 9 seconds left that lifted Arkansas to a 79-77 victory over South Alabama on Wednesday at the Mitchell Center.

Welsh finished with 24 points. His prevous high was 16 points against Mississippi State last season.

Freshman guard Courtney Fortson, who led the Razorbacks with a career-high 25 points, drove the lane and found Welsh beyond the new 20-foot, 9-inch three-point line and Welsh didn’t hesitate to let it rip.

South Alabama senior forward Brandon Davis then threw the inbounds pass out of bounds.

The Jaguars fouled Arkansas freshman forward Michael Sanchez with 2. 1 seconds left and he missed the front end of a 1-and-1, but the rebound was loose under the basket and time ran out.

It was a happy homecoming for Razorbacks Coach John Pelphrey, who was the Jaguars’ coach for five seasons before taking the Arkansas job last year.

South Alabama forward De-Andre Coleman missed two free throws with 19. 6 seconds left with the Jaguars leading 77-76.

South Alabama (3-2 ) was led by junior guard Domonic Tilford’s 23 points. Brandon Davis had 18 points. Bryan Sherrer, a junior point guard from Monticello, had seven points for the Jaguars off the bench.

A three-point basket by Arkansas freshman Rotnei Clarke, who had 12 points, pulled the Razorbacks within 77-76 with 47. 1 seconds left.

South Alabama outscored Arkansas 11-3 to open the second half and took a 56-47 lead on Sherrer’s three-point play — when he hit a driving basket after a steal and added a free throw — with 15: 07 left.

Arkansas pulled within 68-67 on Fortson’s driving basket.

South Alabama pushed its lead to 75-71 on LaShun Watson’s 18-foot jumper with 4: 56 left.

Clarke’s three-point basket with 1: 51 left in the first half pulled the Razorbacks within 45-44.

The Razorbacks hit 8 of 12 three-pointers in a first half that had 11 lead changes and three ties.

South Alabama took a 5-2 lead on a three-pointer by Tilford and a 5-foot jumper by Davis.

Fortson hit his first threepointer to put the Razorbacks ahead 7-5.

Dunks by Davis and Watson and a three-pointer by Tilford gave the Jaguars a 15-9 lead with 15: 25 left in the half.

Arkansas hit four consecutive three-pointers — two by Fortson and one each by Welsh and Clarke — to move ahead 21-17.
