COLLEGE WOMEN JUNKANOO JAM : UA women start cold in Bahamas Published: Saturday, November 29, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL PORT LUCAYA, Bahamas — Arkansas freshman Lyndsay Harris led all scorers with 23 points, but it wasn’t enough as Oregon Sate defeated the Razorbacks 69-56 on Friday in the opening round of the Junkanoo Jam. A solid second half of basketball could not undo Arkansas’ worst opening half of the season. “It was very frustrating,” said Arkansas Coach Tom Collen, whose team faces Pacific (1-2 ) in a consolation game at 5: 15 p. m. Central today. “You’re not going to dig out of a 44-18 hole like that against a BCS conference team.” Harris led a 5-0 start to the second half as Arkansas (4-1 ) held the Beavers to one field goal over the first seven and a half minutes and cut Oregon State’s lead to 46-32. Back-to-back three-pointers from Ayana Brereton pulled Arkansas within 49-40 with 9: 38 to play.
A porous first-half defense tightened up and allowed Oregon State only three field goals until the closing minutes of the game. Arkansas pulled as close as 57-49 with just more than five minutes left, but the Beavers didn’t need a lot of scoring to maintain their lead. Free throws proved to be the difference. Oregon State hit 18 for the game, including 13 in the second half. “I hope the team that we saw in the second half is the one that steps up on the floor tomorrow,” Collen said. “We just couldn’t get all the way back, but give our kids credit. They believed they could.” The Razorbacks opened the game by missing their first six shots and going 1 of 11 before Harris began to find her range. “We didn’t start the game with the confidence we’ve had, and we didn’t get into the press because we were not making shots,” Collen said. “We played a lot faster in the last half, and we gave them a lot of trouble once we could get into our press.” Harris scored 12 of Arkansas’ 18 first-half points. She and fellow freshman Ceira Ricketts accounted for all of the Razorbacks ’ early scoring as the rest of the team combined to go 0 of 17. The Beavers jumped out to an 8-0 start, with six of those points coming from Tiffany Ducker. Ducker finished the opening half with 14 points as the Beavers took a 44-18 lead into halftime. Oregon State shot 69. 2 percent from the field in the first half. Ricketts finished with 17 points for Arkansas, and Brereton had 10. Brittney Davis led Oregon State with 16, followed by Ducker with 14. Alex Mitchell and Cedes Fox-Griffin scored 12 each. SEC / TOP 25 NO. 17 VANDERBILT 82, DAVIDSON 50 NASHVILLE — Hannah Tuomi had 16 points and Christina Wirth added 14 as Vanderbilt defeated Davidson. Wirth scored seven consecutive first-half points, including consecutive three-pointers, to turn a two-point lead (19-17 ) into a nine-point advantage (26-17 ). She also had five rebounds and four assists. Tuomi scored four points in a 9-0 Vanderbilt run to open the second half. Vanderbilt (5-1 ) never trailed, forcing 33 turnovers and allowing just six offensive rebounds. Davidson (1-4 ) had an overall advantage of 33-27 in rebounds. The Wildcats got within four, 26-22, on a three-point basket by Ashley Lax with 5: 53 to play in the first half. She finished with 13 points. Julia Paquette added 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Wildcats. Mercedes Robinson had 10 points. SUN BELT ARKANSAS STATE 88, CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 69 SAN ANTONIO — Junior Veronica Smith scored 21 points to lead Arkansas State (3-3 ) over Charleston Southern (2-4 ) in the opening game of the Star Shuttle UTSA Thanksgiving Classic. Ebonie Jefferson added 15 points and Lyndsay Schlup matched a career high with 11 points for the Red Wolves, who shot a season-best 46. 4 percent from the floor, outrebounded the Buccaneers 51-31 and hit 20 of 22 free throws. Arkansas State used a 22-7 run in the final seven minutes of the first half to build a 44-28 lead by halftime. The Red Wolves led by as many as 21 in the second half. “Overall, it was a pretty solid performance today,” ASU Coach Brian Boyer said. “Charleston Southern is a team that can put some points up, and I thought that holding them to 28 points in the first half was a big accomplishment.” Sophomore Shay Scott started ASU’s first-half run with a basket that gave ASU a 24-21 lead and senior Brittney Hiles helped fuel the run when she made a three-pointer with 1: 27 to play in the half that gave the Red Wolves a 39-28 lead. Freshman Shania Hurst sank a three-pointer and a basket in the lane in the final minute to give ASU its 16-point halftime lead. Arkansas State took its first 20-point lead of the game on a free throw from Schlup that put the Red Wolves up 55-35 with 12: 52 remaining, and the Buccaneers did not get within 15 the rest of the way.
