SEC WOMEN : Arkansas defense overwhelms Pacific

Published: Sunday, November 30, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

PORT LUCAYA, Bahamas — Arkansas pressed the issue Saturday, and Pacific had no answer for it.

Arkansas’ women’s team forced a season-high 26 turnovers and had 18 steals as the Razorbacks defeated the Tigers 78-61 in the consolation game of the Freeport Division at the Junkanoo Jam.

“Our defense was good early, and we got a lot of momentum from our press,” Arkansas Coach Tom Collen said. “We shot the ball better tonight, and it’s good to see us battle back after the way we played on the first night.”

Arkansas also took advantage of a balanced scoring attack with four players finishing with at least 10 points each. Seniors Ayana Brereton and Whitney Jones and freshman Ceira Ricketts had 12 each, while freshman Lyndsay Harris finished with 10.

The Razorbacks took control of the game early, using their swarming defense to force Pacific into 15 first-half turnovers and holding the Tigers to 23. 3 percent shooting in the half.

Arkansas (5-1 ) led 18-8 with just under 12 minutes left in the half before the Tigers fought back behind freshman Claire McLeod, who scored and then drew a charge on the other end as Pacific (1-3 ) pulled within 18-12.

Arkansas’ defense stepped up again, though, coming up with three layups off steals and a pair of free throws that pushed the lead 15 points with 7: 45 left in the half.

Pacific trimmed the lead to 32-20 going into halftime, but Arkansas didn’t waste any time extending that margin in the second half, leading by as much as 27 points midway through the half.

Arkansas forced Pacific into 11 turnovers in the second half, which resulted in 17 points. Arkansas also made 7 of 11 threepointers in the second half, with Charity Ford leading the way with two.

The Razorbacks finished 10 of 23 from the behind the three-point line and were 26 of 58 overall from the floor.

Ford led Arkansas’ defensive effort with five steals, while Ricketts led the team with five assists and Brereton had a team-high six rebounds.

Amber Simmons led Pacific with a game-high 28 points, including 17 in the second half. She scored 11 of the Tigers’ 20 firsthalf points.

Arkansas takes on Memphis at 7 p. m. Central Wednesday at the FedEx Forum in Memphis.
