Josh Heytvelt had 15 points for the Bulldogs, who will play the Vols again on Jan. 7 in Knoxville.

The matchup figured to match strength against strength. The Vols came into the game shooting 53 percent from the field. Gonzaga’s opponents were shooting only 35 percent.

The Bulldogs got the better of that matchup, holding the Vols to 27 of 76 shooting. Gonzaga shot 52 percent, connecting on 27 of 52 attempts.

Five of the game’s first six baskets and each of the Bulldogs’ first three scores were 3 s, as both teams tried to spread the floor for their inside players.

Gonzaga forward Austin Daye picked up two fouls in a 6-second span just over 3 minutes into the game. The Vols started attacking the inside, and so did the Bulldogs, with mixed results.

After Gonzaga went up five on a 3 by Gray midway through the first half, Tennessee went on a 15-6 run. Hopson and Smith each had three-point plays during the surge to help the Vols take a 28-24 lead.

Tightening their inside defense, the Bulldogs closed the first half with an 11-3 spurt.

Tatum was rewarded with the start in place of Hopson after his 17-point performance against Georgetown in the semifinals. The freshman had six points. NO. 17 FLORIDA 86, UMKC 65 ORLANDO, Fla. — Alex Tyus scored 25 points and reserve Chandler Parsons added 17 to help 17 th-ranked Florida overcame a slow start and defeat Missouri-Kansas City. Backup point guard Erving Walker added 13 points and nine assists for the Gators (5-1 ). Dane Brumagin led UMKC with 16 points and Reggie Hamilton added 10. Florida led 40-32 at halftime, but struggled early. The Gators had 10 turnovers in the half and allowed UMKC to shoot 54 percent from the field. The Gators’ defense picked up in the second half and the Gators quickly pushed the lead to double digits. A dunk by Tyus at the end of a fastbreak made it 54-39 with 15: 30 left and the Kangaroos couldn’t get closer than 11. LSU 92, TROY 57

BATON ROUGE — Marcus Thornton scored a season-high 32 points as LSU defeated Troy.

Thornton made 13 of his 24 field goal attempts including 4 three-pointers and also grabbed a season-high 8 rebounds along with 3 assists.
