ARKANSAS 80, TEXAS SOUTHERN 61 : Back and better

Published: Thursday, December 04, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas freshman Jason Henry made up for lost time, helping the Razorbacks to an 80-61 victory over Texas Southern on Wednesday night in Walton Arena before an announced crowd of 10, 303.

Henry, a 6-6 guard from West Memphis who missed the previous three games serving a disciplinary suspension, scored a game-high 19 points and had 7 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 blocked shot in 20 minutes off the bench.

“It was very hard,” Henry said of sitting out three games. “I was at home watching them on TV.

“ I was supposed to be out there, so it was frustrating. But I just had to keep getting in the gym and working hard.

“ I knew I couldn’t play, but I kept practicing hard to get better.”

Henry continued to practice with the Razorbacks (5-1 ) while he was on suspension.

“For two weeks he made a decision to practice harder, be a better human being, have a better attitude,” Arkansas Coach John Pelphrey said. “That’s why he had success tonight.

“ It’s a product of what he’s been doing. When you do the right things, be careful, you’re liable to run into success.”

Pelphrey suspended Henry for what he called a violation of team rules, but wasn’t specific about the reason.

Henry offered an indication of what resulted in his suspension when he was asked after Wednesday night’s game what he learned from the situation.

“Never miss class again,” Henry said. “That was a good lesson. Live and learn.”

Henry hit 7 of 11 field-goal attempts, including 3 of 5 threepointers. He averaged one point in Arkansas’ first two games and was 1 of 6 from the field before his suspension.

“I thought Jason got a chance to get out there and show everybody what type of talent level he has,” Pelphrey said. “He did some good things tonight, but there’s more there.

“ The challenge for all these guys right now, but particularly Jason, is ‘can I do the right things on a daily basis ?’”

After entering the game with 13: 32 in the first half and Arkansas leading 12-6, Henry scored eight points in a 1: 35 span, including two three-point baskets, to help the Razorbacks push their lead to 22-9.

Arkansas led 43-25 at halftime and by as many as 31 points in the second half at 64-33.

Led by Henry, the Razorbacks got 62 points from their freshmen, including 16 from guard Rotnei Clarke and 10 from forward Michael Sanchez.

Razorbacks freshman point guard Courtney Fortson had 11 assists and just 1 turnover to go with 6 points, 5 rebounds and 1 blocked shot.

Junior forward Michael Washington had a team-high nine rebounds and seven points for Arkansas.

Junior guard DeAndre Hall led Texas Southern (0-7 ) with 19 points.

At halftime, Henry had 10 points in eight minutes on 4-of-6 shooting.

“Obviously, he gave us a great lift,” Clarke said. “I’m glad to have him back. This team is glad to have him back.

“ It’s fun knowing he’s out there playing for us, because we are a team. We are united. I’m glad he had a breakout game.”

Henry said he wasn’t nervous when he went in the game, but felt eager to play.

“I had lost a lot of time,” he said. ‘ I had to come out hard. ”

Pelphrey said while he’s pleased with how Henry has done on and off the court in recent days, he’s keeping a realistic mindset.

“As a coach, you try never to be surprised,” Pelphrey said. “Today was good, and I’ve been impressed with what he’s done the last two weeks.

“ Let’s see what he does tomorrow. He’s got to get to breakfast check, go to class, study hall.

“ It’s just day-to-day. We’re not getting carried away.”
