COLLEGE WOMEN : Arkansas leans on freshman Published: Thursday, December 04, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL MEMPHIS — Arkansas extended its winning streak against Memphis to seven games Wednesday night at the FedEx Forum, getting a teamhigh 15 points from freshman guard Ceira Ricketts in a 76-69 victory. Ricketts began the game leading Arkansas in scoring with 13. 5 points per game and had nine in the first half against Memphis as the Razorbacks opened a 46-38 halftime lead. Arkansas (6-1 ) pushed its lead to 15 points twice in the second half before withstanding a late rally by Memphis (5-3 ). Arkansas, playing its first true road game of the season after going 1-1 at a neutral-site event in the Bahamas last week, won for the third consecutive time at Memphis. “I think it was a good win for our team,” Coach Tom Collen said. “This was a spirited crowd, they were in it at the end, and we had to battle through that.
“ It wasn’t pretty, but hopefully we got better.” Ricketts, the only player to score 10 or more points in each of Arkansas’ seven games, also had 10 rebounds, 5 steals and 3 assists. Whitney Jones added 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Shanita Arnold, Ayana Brereton and Brittney Richardson scored nine points each. Memphis got a game-high 27 points from senior guard Paris Leonard and 14 from junior guard Tehani Goldsmith. Leonard made 13 of 15 free throws, and the Tigers combined to make 23 of 32. Both teams were sluggish in the early going, and Arkansas led just 8-3 with 14: 06 left in the first half. Goldsmith later tied the score at 13 with a fast-break layup, but Richardson put the Razorbacks ahead for good at 20-17 on a three-pointer with 5: 45 before halftime. Memphis trimmed the deficit to five points in the opening minutes of the second half, but Lyndsay Harris’ two free throws with 12: 34 to play pushed Arkansas ’ lead back to 11 at 51-40. The Razorbacks later stretched the advantage to 15 points, the last time coming on a jumper by Jones with less than 7: 00 to play. Memphis used a 10-1 run, however, capped by two Leonard free throws, to get within 66-62 with 2: 55 to go. Charity Ford then made 1 of 2 free throws, with Jones converting the miss into a putback basket, as Arkansas took a 69-62 lead. Memphis didn’t get closer than five points in the final 2: 30. Arkansas plays Mississippi Valley State (1-4 ) at 4 p. m. on Friday in the first round of a four-team tournament hosted by Kansas State.
