SEC MEN : Smith records a Vols first; Pearl wins No. 400 Published: Thursday, December 04, 2008 PRINT E-MAIL KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tyler Smith became the first Tennessee player to collect 10 or more in three statistical categories in one game, helping the No. 10 Volunteers beat UNC-Ashville 87-69 on Wednesday night. Smith, a 6-7 junior forward, finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, helping the Volunteers give Coach Bruce Pearl career victory No. 400. “It’s an honor to be the first player to do that with all the great players who have come through this university,” Smith said. The school has played 2, 338 games in 100 years without having one.
Smith got his 10 th assist on Scotty Hopson’s three-pointer with 7: 47 left. A minute later, Smith got a standing ovation when the feat was announced to the crowd. “It’s pretty fitting Tyler Smith was the guy to do it because he may be the most productive player I have ever coached,” Pearl said. “When you talk about most valuable players, Tyler is the glue.” Pearl, in his fourth season at Tennessee and 17 th overall, joined some legendary company by winning his 400 th after coaching 509 games. Only Adolph Rupp, Clair Bee, Jerry Tarkanian, Roy Williams and Henry Iba reached the 400-victory plateau in fewer games. “When you’re in the middle of a season, it’s not a time to reflect on things like that,” Pearl said. “This was about victory No. 6.” Tennessee (6-1 ) still had to shake off a sluggish start before its up-tempo offense and highpressure defense provided some breathing room against the Bulldogs (3-4 ). Reid Augst and John Williams finished with 14 points each for the Bulldogs, who were within 18-16 about 12 minutes in and holding Tennessee to 27. 3 percent shooting from the field. A strong inside move and three-point play from sophomore Brian Williams — making his first start of the season — finally got the Vols going with 5: 34 left in the half. The Williams play and a three-pointer from Josh Tabb ignited a 20-9 run to make it 43-27 at halftime. After going 2 of 10 on threepoint attempts in the first half, Tennessee managed five threepointers in the second half, including two by Cameron Tatum. Tatum, Tabb and J. P. Prince finished with 10 points each for the Vols. Prince played despite an illness that required IV fluids earlier in the day. Tennessee improved its school-record home winning streak to 35 games. Tennessee hasn’t lost at Thompson-Boling Arena since an 80-78 setback to Kentucky on March 1, 2006. KENTUCKY 103, LAMAR 61 LEXINGTON, Ky. — Patrick Patterson scored a career-high 31 points and Jodie Meeks added 19 points and 6 assists as Kentucky (5-2 ) beat Lamar (5-1 ) for its fifth consecutive victory. DeAndre Liggins, playing in his first home game since clashing with Coach Billy Gillispie during last week’s Las Vegas Invitational, added 16 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for the Wildcats. The Wildcats played most of the game without Ramon Harris, who was taken to a local hospital for tests after colliding with teammate Michael Porter in the first half. Harris and Porter appeared to bang heads while scrambling near a loose ball, with both players falling to the floor. Harris struggled to get to his feet before falling back to the floor. Harris was alert and undergoing tests at University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center, team spokesman DeWayne Peevy said. Harris had movement in all his extremities, but the nature of his injury had not been determined. Porter received 10 stitches over his left eye but was back on the bench by the end of the first half, though he did not return. WEST VIRGINIA 80, MISSISSIPPI 78 OXFORD, Miss. — Alex Ruoff, who scored 16 points, made two free throws with 17. 7 seconds left to lift West Virginia (5-1 ) to victory over Mississippi (5-2 ), which saw its 25-game home winning streak against nonconference foes end. Warren added 18 points, Terrico White 13 and Murphy Holloway had 11. Da’Sean Butler scored 22 points for the Mountaineers.
