University of Arkansas Chancellor John A. White talks about his decission to step down as the University's Chancellor Wednesday in his office on the university of Arkansas campus.

— University of Arkansas Chancellor John A. White will retire effective June 30, sources said Wednesday morning.

White, 67, has been the chancellor of the Fayetteville campus since 1997.

White said it was time for "someone new to continue the remarkable progress" made during his 10 years at the university. He said he also wanted to spend more time with his family. He will stay on as an engineering professor at the school.

B. Alan Sugg, president of the University of Arkansas System, said White began talking about stepping down as chancellor several months ago. Sugg, an undergraduate classmate of White's at the university, said he wanted the next chancellor to have the same fundraising ability as White had.

"Dr. White's greatest legacy is the amount of private funds he's been able to raise over the last 10 years," Sugg said. "That will forever help the university better serve students and better serve the state of Arkansas."
