Spurrier seeks steady progress

The Ol’ Ball Coach wants to believe he’s got one more good run at an SEC title in him, but he knew it wasn’t going to be this year.

Only nine seniors returned to this year’s Gamecocks, giving South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier good reason to scale back the expectations.

“Our goals were not the division this year,” said Spurrier, who guided Florida to six outright SEC titles and the 1996 NCAA championship in 12 seasons at his alma mater. “We just wanted our team to improve week to week, win more than we lose and be bowl eligible and try to go win a bowl game. That was a very realistic goal for our team.”
