Tailback Michael Smith's career at Arkansas is over. The senior will miss the remainder of the season because of a hamstring injury that has hampered him for most of the season.

The announcement came an hour before the Hogs were scheduled to play Mississippi State at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock.

"We are appreciative of the many contributions that Michael Smith has made as a player and a leader on our football team," Arkansas Coach Bobby Petrino said in a statement. "His maturity, work ethic and willingness to mentor younger teammates has made a tremendous impact on our program. Though a hamstring injury will prevent him from playing again for the Razorbacks, Michael Smith remains a valued member of this football team."

Smith finishes his senior season with 396 rushing yards on 71 carries with two touchdowns. The Tallahassee, Fla., native rushed for 2,018 yards in 39 games as a Razorback, with 14 starts in his career. Smith led the team with 1,072 rushing yards and eight touchdowns last season and was the Hogs' second-leading receiver on the team with 32 catches for 298 yards and two touchdowns.

Smith underwent season-ending surgery on a hamstring in the final week of last season, and was injured in some fashion in three of his last five games in 2008.

I salute you Michael. Thank you for all of your contributions to the Razorback program. As a Razorback fan, I have been honored to be able to watch you not only play, but also set a great example for the other players. I hate that you are injured, but please help "coach" the team to a Cotton Bowl win.

GO HOGS!!!!

I too, salute you Michael. Even though you are not a "big back" your heart is so big, as is your competitive spirit. Even though you will not be playing, you can, and will, contribute to this football team with your attitude. Thanks for coming to Arkansas. And, best wishes for the future.
