Mallett’s big arm providing big plays, missed opportunities

FAYETTEVILLE Ryan Mallett’s big arm may be getting Arkansas into some unexpected trouble.
The lore of the redshirt sophomore’s fastball throws ripping gloves in the pre-season widened fans’ eyes and hopes, but his big arm and big-play ability has led to a sputtering offense and a coach scratching his head.
And the criticism has built up from Arkansas head coach Bobby Petrino, especially after Mallett’s last two performances consisted of a 39.3-percent completion percentage and two touchdowns.
Petrino credits the decline in Mallett’s production to technique, poise and looking downfield a little too often in an attempt to make big plays. Mallett’s big arm has led to plenty of touchdowns and highlight-reel throws. The ...

Ryan Mallett co-leads the nation in pass completions of 25 yards or more with 25, and is near the top of several other similar passing categories in the nation. Mallett’s big-play ability has given the redshirt sophomore 1,900 passing yards for 15 touchdowns with three interceptions and category-leading numbers in passing yards per game and touchdowns for an SEC quarterback through seven games, but he admits he may have thrown deep too often in Arkansas’ 30-17 loss to Ole Miss, as he completed just 35 percent of his pass attempts.
