Picks and Pans: CBS' Danielson misuses metaphors
Friday, September 25, 2009
FAYETTEVILLE The PGA Tour's FedEx Cup and U.S. Open Tennis preempted CBS' college football coverage the first two weeks of the season, so Vern Lundquist and Gary Danielson's call of the Florida-Tennessee game last Saturday marked the broadcast duo's 2009 debut.
The two have been paired as CBS' No. 1 crew since 2006, giving them plenty of time to establish a rapport that enriches their broadcasts.
Lundquist's baritone has made some of the most monumental calls in sports.
Whether it's the empathy he showed for Dallas Cowboy tight end Jackie Smith, whose dropped touchdown pass in Super Bowl XIII prompted the famous call of "Bless his heart, he's got to be the sickest man in America!," or the "Maybe...YES SIR!" he uttered after Jack Nicklaus' birdie at the 17th hole of the 1986 Masters, Lundquist succinctly captures the essence of the moment.
Brevity, however, isn't a virtue shared by his broadcast partner. Danielson's style is enjoyable enough, but he makes comments that would be better left unsaid.
For example, Danielson said Florida's Brandon James would've caught a second quarter touchdown pass if the Tennessee defender hadn't "dislodged" the ball. It's patently obvious to the sighted football fan that the Tennessee defender's concussive hit thwarted a potential touchdown. Danielson doesn't need to belabor the point.
Danielson's approach is earnest, but he also has a habit of botching metaphors. Last Saturday he equated a defensive penalty that continued a drive to an "inning-ending error."
In the history of baseball, has an inning ever ended with an error? If it has, it would be an anomaly meriting investigation by the Elias Sports Bureau.
