GEORGIA

Dogs’ scrimmage ‘sloppy’

ATHENS, Ga. - Coach Mark Richt said Georgia’s defense played well but the offense struggled and was sloppy at times in the team’s scrimmage at Sanford Stadium.

After Saturday’s scrimmage, Richt said he is glad the Bulldogs still have three weeks to prepare for the season.

Quarterback Aaron Murray completed only 8 of 20 passes for 133 yards, including a 43-yard gain to Logan Gray, the former quarterback who has moved to receiver. Gray had three catches for 70 yards.

Backup quarterback Hutson Mason was 8 of 18 passing for 48 yards. Washaun Ealey had seven carries for 78 yards.

Richt said center Ben Jones will have arthroscopic knee surgery Sunday. Jones is expected to beready for the season opener against Louisiana-Lafayette on Sept. 4.

KENTUCKY

Wildcats mix good, bad

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Kentucky’s quarterback competition is still too close to call.

Coach Joker Phillips said Mike Hartline, Morgan Newton and Ryan Mossakowski all showed flashes during Saturday’s scrimmage, but all three also committed untimely blunders. Phillips blamed most of the miscues on a lack of timing, something he hopes will improve as the Wildcats continue throughout camp.

Hartline was named the starter when camp began, but Phillips said he won’t make a final decision on the job for at least another week.

Junior wide receiver Gene Mc-Caskill suffered a knee injury and freshman running back Miles Simpson sustained an ankle injury during the scrimmage. Phillips said he won’t know the extent of the injuries until Sunday.
