LIKE IT IS: Petrino wields power on state’s sports scene

There was a time it probably would have been a unanimous answer to the question, “Who is the most powerful person in Arkansas sports?” Until his retirement as director of athletics, Frank Broyles would have easily been No. 1, and probably Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Any game between the UA and ASU would be a huge mistake. The UA is one of the few major universities in the entire country with an undivided fan base.

Today's article about incoming freshman Jeremiah Jackson underscores the point. The statewide fan support behind the program was a primary reason the kid committed to the Razorbacks.

As a fan, I enjoy supporting BOTH of the athletic programs, in Fayetteville and Jonesboro. However, the UA would have absolutely nothing to gain from playing ASU.

I agree that we wouldn't have anything to gain by playing A-state, but I would rather see the money from that game stay in state instead of giving it to Louisiana-Monroe each year and letting them count it as their home game. Overall, I would rather see us play a stronger opponent, but if we need a "cupcake" then lets at least keep the money in state.

If the Razorbacks were playing Texas, USC, Notre Dame, Missouri, Oklahoma, etc. in non conf games then, yeah, I'd say Ark State has no business asking to crack that lineup. But as long as the Hogs play Tenn Tech, UL-Monroe, UTEP, Eastern Michigan, Missouri State, Sisters of the Poor, etc. in non-conf then it is a legitimate question. Personally, I'd love to see Ark and ASU play in football and basketball. It would be great for the FANS. And I fail to see how playing ASU would diminish Ark's reputation anymore than playing the cupcakes Ark plays now in non-conf.
