The Tennessean, Nashville’s daily newspaper, polled veteran sportswriters on several SEC basketball topics, including ranking the conference’s coaches.

Arkansas Coach John Pelphrey finished 11th in the poll, ahead of Auburn Coach Jeff Lebo, who was a unanimous pick to be the next SEC coach fired.

Sportswriters have been writing longer than SEC coaches have been coaching.
They have seen this all before, when you cannot control your team, have a loose cannon on the floor all the time, no offense plays set for your best shooter. No team work, no coaching. The league overall will be better next year, which will offset any improvement by Pel. Change of direction is needed, the sportswriters and the fans see it.

I wish I could disagree with you guys. Pel is in over his head. Eddie or Nolan would have sat Fortson game after game until he realized who the boss is. Clarke could go down as one of the greatest shooters on NCAA history, but not the way this team values his skills. If I were Clarke, I would transfer. (just for the record, I don't want that to happen)

No matter what people say or demand about Pel, he is still going to get that 4th year. I just don't think his heart is in it. I think he would be better suited to be an assistant at UK. I still think Ky. fired coach would be a good fit. He would do as he did at A&M and quietly build a solid progam. The limelight at Ky. was just too much for him. There's just too much drama at UA.

I just don't see anything special about Pelphrey, right now he is under a lot of pressure but he just doesn't seem like he has any fire in his belly. AD Long if you don't fix this situation, people are going to start looking at you and your abilities next. Basketball has to get fixed, we can't linger in this state for much longer.

Pelphrey has actually benefited from a set of circumstances that have not been good for the UA. He took his first team to the NCAA tourney with a record number of seniors. That left him with a team of newcomers for his 2nd season, which was pitiful. Strike one. Then he had a large number of those 1st-year players leave the program and several suspensions in the off-season that led to this season's debacle. Strike two. No matter what happens this off-season, I think a bad season next year (which would be more than 10 losses in my opinion) is Strike three for Pelphrey.

A couple personal observations:

1. Eddie Sutton and Nolen Richardson are no longer in coaching.

2. Arkansas' program was so deeply in the toilet when Stan Smith left, we were dissed by the coach at CREIGHTON.

3. John Pelfrey is NOT Eddie Sutton or Nolen Richardson, but he deserves a FAIR amount of time to turn around a program that has had serious internal and external problems since before Nolen was let go.

4. Sorry guys, but there isn't a line at the door to replace this coach, either.

5. Pelfrey has recruited some very good players and is bringing in some top notch talent the next couple years.

6. I think we are judging Pel way too harshly. This guy can coach and recruit. If he has one fault it's he's not Eddie or Nolen when it comes to chewing out his players.

Give him two more years. That's FAIR. I think that by then you'll be worried about losing Coach Pelfrey, not firing him!

I have mixed emotions about this season. It started under a cloud of controversy with the potential rape situation. It got further exacerbated with the rash of injuries in the early part of the season. And, it is a fact that Fortson is high maintenance, plain and simple.

I don't know that Pelphrey being let go is the answer. You simply create more turmoil and as stated in an earlier post, "there isn't a line at the door." I'm of the belief that Long and Pelphrey will have a meeting within the next week or two. I also believe that expectations will be set for next season that may involve a "results or else..." tone.

We won't be waiting "long" to see what happens after that.
