Arkansas still working to find 12th opponent

There were no big surprises for Arkansas with the release of the 2012 SEC football schedule Wednesday, so now the Razorbacks can concentrate on landing their final non-conference opponent.

The lsu game should be in fayettevile. The LSU game is usually the most important and best game of the year and for 20,000 fans not to even have a chance to buy a ticket is just crazy.

LSU to FV and Kentucky to LR. First LR game should be LA Monroe. Done.

I like the idea too, but I wonder how that would effect the finances coming from the telecast. The Nielson ratings trump all and Kentucky is no where near the draw LSU is.

Great idea if it can be made to work though.

If we want to raise the standard another notch, here are some possibilities I would like us to look at for that marquee non-conference game in Cowboys Stadium (in order of preference):
1) Notre Dame (might be a good time to work something out with them as they are getting left behind by the Big 10/12 and Pac-12.
2) Boise State (BSU would probably jump at the chance to play this game as a prelude to their move to the Big East)
3) BYU (having trouble scheduling big names now that they have gone independent)
4) Texas (this is probably the best match actually but I just can't put Texas #1 in anything...)

My prefernce is either Arizona or Az. St. since we seem to be recruiting more in that area now. Maybe even Illinois or Indiana.

If the A&M game stays in Arlington, Florida State, USC, Notre Dame, Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn State, or Ohio State, on a home and home basis, would be enticing.

If the A&M game is moved to campus, Oklahoma, Okie State, Boise State or TCU would be an interesting matchup in Arlington each year.

Why not Arkansas State as the 12th opponent? Every team in the SEC has an in-state rival game (Ole Ms vs MS State; TN vs Vandy; KY vs Louisville; SC vs Clemson). We are the only SEC team who doesn't play an in-state rival. And, with Malzahn as coach, it should be a sporting game.

I agree with jyoung1052. Schedule the game with ASU in Little Rock. Keep the revenue in the state of Arkansas. Perhaps with the additional funds an expansion and upgrade to War Memorial can be financed.

The UA has absolutely nothing to gain in scheduling ASU. Nada.

Many years ago, I played ball at Okie State and every time we made a trip to Norman, we were spat on, cursed, ridiculed and occasionally dodged objects being thrown from the stands. OU received the same treatment in Stillwater. Fans fought and hated one another, in season and out, year round.

In addition to further dividing an already small recruiting base, why in the world would the UA or anyone [honestly] for that matter, want such a thing?

The Razorbacks are one of the very few schools in the entire country with a unique and undivided fan base. Personally, I pull for both UA and ASU - yet, wouldn't, if they played against one another. In my opinion, Frank Broyles had this one right on, without question.

Bring on the Huskers. Supposedly, on September 22, Nebraska has an open date. Like Arkansas, the Huskers have a unique and undivided following. Jerry's World [or elsewhere] would be filled to capacity.

Nebraska would be terrific for our schedule. I wonder too if Southern Cal would consider getting back with us. There's no doubt in my mind that the outcome would be dramatically different from what we experienced a few years ago.

Our program has grown so much under Petrino that we should not settle for anything less than a marquee non-conference matchup.

Nebraska would make sense, geographically, as well as a perenial top 20 football team! Good TV audience!, Close enough for a nice weekend trip for all fans without airfair costs added on.

For some reason the A&M game in Arlington never sold out, even with the large base of Aggie and Razorback fans in the Dallas Metroplex. So it is doubtfull, that unless another Texas team is scheduled to play us, that all the tickets can be sold. These games should be played in Arkansas. The folks in the Hills need to concentrate on building the attendance up in F. Most of the football games are not sold out and the basketball attendance is a joke. Playing ASU would revive interest in central Arkansas and keep the dollars in state.

dwp007 says...

Nebraska fans would travel to Egypt to see their beloved Huskers play ball. Razorback fans are the same way, and again, both teams are unique with their undivided and loyal following.

The Razorbacks do not need to revive interest in central Arkansas - other than perhaps, with a very small minority of people who have never really been fans to begin with. As with Bobby Petrinio, the basketball situation will correct itself once Mike Anderson has some time to put his system and players in place.

Playing ASU would make absolutely no sense. None. It's a classic no win situation, on every level.

I'm amazed at how some could see playing ASU as a no-win situation. The state of Arkansas is not confined to the NW part of the state. How selfish to want all the money to go to one place at the expense of every one else in the state. This will only keep our program and state 30 light years behind everyone else in the country. Perhaps we are more afraid of success than failure. Classic case of the haves not wanting to share with the have-nots. Capitalism was meant to give us "equality of opportunity" into the marketplace not domination by one entity at the expense of others.

JFM,

Do you consider ASU to be like Michigan St., Oklahoma St. or Florida St.? Would they command the same media attention as do these programs when they match up with their respective in-state rivals, Michigan, Oklahoma and Florida? Didn't think so.

Keep dreaming.
