Berna expected to miss 2011; Calender released

— Arkansas’ football roster continued its post-spring shakeup Wednesday with news of two more players, offensive lineman Colby Berna and tight end Ryan Calender, who aren’t likely to return in 2011.

Berna, a Fayetteville High School product and one of the top in-state recruits in 2009, is likely headed for a medical hardship, and he might be nearing the end of his college career. Berna redshirted in 2009 after undergoing shoulder surgery, wasn’t able to participate in 2010 and was still sidelined by shoulder issues this spring.

Berna, 20, could not be reached for comment Wednesday. A media relations official said the university is working through the medical hardship process for Berna.

Calender has been granted his release from the football program, a university official confirmed.

Calender, 20, signed with the Razorbacks in 2009 as a defensive end and outside linebacker out of Caddo Mills, Texas. He worked at both of those positions during his redshirt and freshman seasons before switching to tight end late last year.

Calender is the third Razorback to receive his release from the program since the end of spring, joining receiver Lance Ray and kicker Eduardo Camara.

Calender showed good hands and decent speed at tight end during the spring but was running fifth team behind Chris Gragg, Austin Tate, Garrett Uekman and converted offensive lineman Denton Simek. He also was likely to fall behind freshman signees Demetrius Dean and Andrew Peterson when fall camp opened. Calender finished his Arkansas career with no statistics.
