It all rests on the Razorbacks’ shoulders

While the Arkansas Razorbacks aren’t strangers to big games, Friday’s game with LSU could be historic.

Wally:

A wonderful column. I vividly remember The Big Shootout. I was a 19-year-old sideline photographer for the Hot Springs Sentinel Record and still remember the big plays made by Texas in the second half. To this day, I can still see James Street sprinting by me on his way to the endzone. If only I had tackled him.....:) Even though the Hogs lost, it will always be my most memorable event as a member of the media. Here's hoping Friday's game has a different outcome.

Wally,

Nice column but your facts are a little off. When Arkansas beat Texas in 1965, the Hogs were ranked second in one poll and third in another (AP and UPI). The next week they moved to No. 1 in the AP poll for the first (and only) time. Even a lopsided win over North Texas State the following week couldn't keep Michigan State from overtaking Arkansas in the polls and the two teams stayed one and two for the remainder of the regular season. Alabama had a loss (first game to Georgia) and a tie on its record and only ascended to No. 1 after Arkansas lost to LSU in the Cotton Bowl and Michigan State was upset by UCLA in the Rose Bowl. Bear Bryant had it both ways, winning the pre-bowl titles in '64 (which were meaningless) and the post-bowl titles in '65. The only time Arkansas trailed Alabama in the polls in '65 was in the final one.

The Razorbacks' shoulders are big enough to bravely go where no players have gone before. Oh wait a minute excuse me, that's the Star Trek quote. Anyway our Hog coaches and players are up to the task at hand.....they are Hawg tough with big shoulders. I have faith in CBP and the boys.

This is were 17 Seniors come to play. They will not be overwhelmed by the game. They have been through the lows and highs. Have we ever had one class that has meant this much to Arkansas Razorback football.

Good article Wally. I was a sophomore at U of A in 1965 and worked for the athletic department alternating the balls on the sideline during the Ark-Tex game in 1965 in Fayettevile. I still have one of the game balls that I took to my car immediately after the game. The Brittenum to Crockett combo was deadly during that game. I still remember the Trantham long interception too.

Don't you just want a sit down and catch your breath on where the program has come, this year's team has come and think about the possibilities that lay ahead? One step at a time...okay.

But on Friday at 2:30 EST, yours truly will not be sitting but pacing the floor, wearing out the rug for three and a half hours. I will do all the superstitious things I do each game and not waiver.

Are we really going to have to play Alabama again after we win on Friday??

I wanna see four quarters of absolute grind... I've seen this team do that all year. Keep focused and play each down, 110%. I love this teams heart. Can't wait to see them perform.
