Mustain, White Sox close to deal

Southern California quarterback Mitch Mustain warms up his arm before a game during his junior season in 2009.

— A person familiar with the situation says former Arkansas and Southern California quarterback Mitch Mustain is closing in on a minor-league contract with the Chicago White Sox.

The person spoke Friday on the condition of anonymity because the deal had not been finalized. That is expected to happen early next week.

Mustain told the NBC affiliate in Northwest Arkansas that he had agreed to a deal with the White Sox. He had planned to play in the Arena Football League this year but put that on hold.

A right-handed pitcher, Mustain hasn't played baseball since he was a sophomore at Springdale High School. He started eight games as quarterback at Arkansas as a freshman in 2006 before transferring to USC and backing up Mark Sanchez and Matt Barkley.

Mustain was the 2005 consensus national football player of the year at Springdale and was one of the most highly recruited players in history.

A Northwest Arkansas filmmaker told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette last month a documentary on Mustain is currently in production.

I'll buy a White Sox hat if he makes it. Thinking it through I'll never wear it but I'm for MM all the way. Good luck Mitch Mustain.

HOW did Mustain get a raw deal from Nutt?!!! For God's sake, the kid nearly blew several games for us--fortunately we had some crazy good backs running the ball.

My how short memories are around here.

MSH please tell us it's Friday night and you've had 50 beers. Can't ever have gotten down on a college kid for being a little lost and confused. Unless ofcourse he's a coward and transferred to Butler.

Mustain got completely screwed by nutless. Got benched even though he was UNDEFEATED as a freshman qb, 8-0 I believe. Probably the first time that had ever happened anywhere. No telling how many games and recruits we lost over that move. Not to mention nutless' bungling of malzahn, and how many wins and recruits did that cost us? Heck, nutless even had his wife going through the kid's emails.

But hey, everything turned out in the end. Nutless went to ole piss and got his brains beat out and subsequently received his well-deserved termination. Ark FINALLY got rid of frank broyles as AD and then was able to hire a real football coach. The last 2 years have proven what an upgrade in UA coaching that has been. Malzahn went to Auburn and helped them win a national championship and now has his first college head coaching job at Arkansas State.

I wish Mustain nothing but the best. I just wish we had a sane football coach when he was here and Mitch could have finished his career as a Razorback.

Its amazing that this young man may be on the verge of reinventing his career. Good for him. rlw59, I was fine with your post till you got to Frank Broyles. Frank is the pioneer and centerpoint legend of Razorback Football and athletics...PERIOD!!

You have JFB to thank for all the sports facilities on campus, NONE of which were paid for with ONE CENT of taxpayer money.

JFB put the Hogs on the national scene in the 1960's, winning a National Championship in 1964 and producing future head coaches that themselves would go on to greatness (i.e. Jimmy Johnson, Joe Gibbs, Barry Switzer, Ken Hatfield, shall I go on?).

JFB had the forward thinking to negotiate Arkansas' move to the SEC in 1992, catapulting the entire program into a much more lucrative and higher national exposure position.

Some of his best hires include Lou Holtz, Eddie Sutton, Nolan Richardson, John McDonnell, Ken Hatfield and Dave Van Horn. Wow, wonder what those guys were able to accomplish??

JFB continues (and probably will until they throw dirt on his box) to be the pivotal force in fundraising for the Razorback Foundation as Athletic Director Emeritus. So as you can see, you could have stopped there, been thought a fool, but opened your mouth and removed all doubt.

...........ua87 is 100% right!
In 2000 I personally found it hard to believe that the U of Arkansas' Razorback Stadium needed to increase its seating capacity from its then 51,000 to 72,000 during the 2000-2001 renovations under the leadership vision of A.D. Frank Broyles at the time......(with an option to expand capacity to 80,000 with temporary bleacher seating).

MY QUESTION AT THE TIME WAS - Where would Broyles find enough Hog fans to fill that new 72,000 capacity Razorback Stadium?

But Broyles' vision of Arkansas in SEC football was correct, and the Razorback football program has been the beneficiary of "Broyles forward-thinking vision" for the Razorback Stadium expansion in 2001. Many games in Fayetteville could soon even sell out the 80,000 capacity, if all temporary seating was installed as Broyles planned it.

"THANK YOU FOREVER" A.D. COACH FRANK BROYLES for your many contributions and the foundation that you built and left for Razorback football.

We all make mistakes, but Frank Broyles is a living legend and whether he was right or wrong, has always bled Razorback red. He was right most of the time, and thankfully, the University of Arkansas has benefited tremendously in the process.

Frank Broyles was a good athletic director, he irritated me as a coach sometimes, seems like he was run twice and punt most of the time. I said that Mustain got a raw deal because Nutt talked him into coming to Fayetville by hiring Malzahn then wouldn't let Malzahn run the offense as he wanted to. With Mustain and the running back we had Arkansas should of been run the table but Nutt's offense sucked.

Malzahn as Auburn offensive coordinator proved he has a top football offensive mind.

Yes, hogfaninflorida, it is possible that that year Mustain quarterbacking and McFadden and Felix running Malzahn's offense could have run the tables......How great would that have been to be undefeated back in what, the season of 2006?

Coach Petrino will do his best to give Razorbacks an undefeated season yet...but Alabama will always be a mountain to climb on the way. Petrino is tops for Arkansas' coaches now and future.

ua87, if you want to kiss frank broyles butt and blabber on about how freaking great he is you can. But that makes YOU the FOOL!!! Yeah, FB did some wonderful things for UA back in the day. And yeah, because of his position he helps with fundraising. But he is also the guy that ran off Lou Holtz and presided over most of the time in the past 29 years when Ark was NOT ranked in the Top Ten and rendered irrelevant in college football until he was FINALLY removed and Petrino was hired and got things back on track.

FB is also the same person that ran off nolan richardson and put the basketball program through 10 years of being irrelevant. Plus making embarassing racial comments that probably cost us several recruits in all sports. His handling of the richardson situation was a complete fiasco. But now that FB is gone we were able to hire mike anderson, who I believe will restore the program to a nationally elite level.

So if you want to praise someone who ruined the football program for 30 YEARS and the basketball program for 10 years, go ahead. But that and every other post you put on here make YOU look like the MORON you are!
