Ex-Razorback Hinske’s pinch-hit HR lifts Arizona

MILWAUKEE - Pinch hitter Eric Hinske (Arkansas Razorbacks) belted a long two-run home run in the 11th inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-7 on Sunday to complete a three-game series sweep.

With Cliff Pennington aboard following a lead off double, Hinske drove a 1-2 pitch from John Axford (0-1) onto the concourse beyond the wall in center field. Hinske raised his right arm as he rounded second with his eighth career pinch-hit homer.

Tony Sipp (1-0) struck out two in a perfect 10th inning and Heath Bell held on for his first save after J.J. Putz blew an opportunity in the ninth.

METS 4, MARLINS 3 Marlon Byrd grounded a two-run single just inside third base in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the host New York Mets a victory over Miami. Daniel Murphy homered and Anthony Recker had a run-scoring double for the Mets, who spoiled the debut of prized pitching prospect Jose Fernandez.

REDS 6, NATIONALS 3 Johnny Cueto outlasted Stephen Strasburg in a highly anticipated match up of young aces and Jay Bruce drove in three runs as Cincinnati wrapped up a home stand with a victory over Washington. Cueto needed 108 pitches to get through 6 innings, allowing 7 hits and 3 runs.

BRAVES 5, CUBS 1 Tim Hudson pitched six-plus strong innings and added an RBI and Ramiro Pena hit a two-run single to help Atlanta beat Chicago.

ROCKIES 9, PADRES 1 Dexter Fowler hit an early two-run home run and Jhoulys Chacin pitched effectively into the seventh inning, helping Colorado to victory in Denver. It was was the Rockies first sweep of the Padres at Coors Field in 10 years. Chacin (1-0) surrendered one run before being pulled with two outs in the seventh.

DODGERS 6, PIRATES 2 Hyun-Jin Ryu earned his first major league victory, shrugging off a two-run home run in the first inning by Andrew McCutchen and pitching host Los Angeles past Pittsburgh for a three-game sweep. Adrian Gonzalez drove in four runs with three hits and Justin Sellers homered for the Dodgers. Ryu (1-1)allowed 2 runs and 3 hits in 61/3 innings, striking out 6 and walking 2.

CARDINALS 14, GIANTS 3 Matt Cain became the first San Francisco pitcher to allow nine runs inan inning since 1902 as St. Louis routed the Giants in San Francisco. The Cardinals chased Cain (0-1) while scoring nine times in the fourth inning.

AMERICAN LEAGUE YANKEES 7, TIGERS 0 CC Sabathia pitched seven scoreless innings and Jayson Nix homered off Justin Verlander in a three-run second, lifting visiting New York by Detroit. The Yankees (2-4) avoided a sweep and dropping to their worst six game record since starting the 1989 season 1-7. Sabathia (1-1) gave up 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4.

RED SOX 13, BLUE JAYS 0 Will Middlebrooks hit three home runs, Mike Napoli added a two-run shot and Boston roughed up Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey in Toronto. Middlebrooks went 4 for 5 with four RBI.

TWINS 4, ORIOLES 3 Aaron Hicks ended an 0-for-13 skid with a tie breaking RBI single in a two-run seventh inning, rallying Minnesota past host Baltimore. J.J. Hardy homered for the Orioles

INDIANS 13, TAMPA BAY 0 Mark Reynolds and Lonnie Chisenhall hit three-run homers off AL Cy Young Award winner David Price, Justin Masterson pitched seven strong inning and Cleveland hammered Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla. Carlos Santana had a career-high five hits, including a home run and a pair of doubles. Price (0-1) gave up 8 runs, 10 hits and 3 walks in 5 innings.

ATHLETICS 9, ASTROS 3 Brett Anderson struck out 10 Houston batters and Oakland backed him with three home runs as the A’s finished a sweep of the Astros in Houston. Coco Crisp, Jed Lowrie and Chris Young homered for Oakland.

WHITE SOX 4, MARINERS 3 Dayan Viciedo hit a solo home run with one out in the 10th inning Sunday, lifting the White Sox over Seattle Mariners in Chicago. Viciedo hit the first game-ending home run of his career, connecting against Kameron Loe (1-1). Adam Dunn and Alex Rios homered earlier for Chicago.

RANGERS 7, ANGELS 3 Lance Berkman, David Murphy and Ian Kinsler homered for Texas, which won two of three games in its home-opening series against Los Angeles. Josh Hamilton had three hits for the Angels.

INTERLEAGUE ROYALS 9, PHILLIES 8 Billy Butler hit a grand slam that was confirmed by video review and tied a Royals franchise record with seven RBI as Kansas City held on against host Philadelphia. Butler’s fifth-inning home run, the first slam of his career and the first ever allowed by Philadelphia left hander Cole Hamels, put Kansas City ahead 6-4.
