Ficociello could miss another week

Dominic Ficociello missed the season-opening series against Western Illinois with a strained oblique.

— Arkansas could be without projected starting second baseman Dominic Ficociello for another week, Razorbacks coach Dave Van Horn said Sunday.

Ficociello missed Arkansas' season-opening series against Western Illinois with a strained oblique muscle suffered two weeks ago. The Razorbacks won two out of three games against the Leathernecks, but dropped the finale 7-5.

Arkansas will host New Orleans for a two-game series beginning Tuesday and Evansville for a three-game series beginning Friday.

"I don't see him playing this whole week probably," Van Horn said. "Maybe Saturday or Sunday if things really change, but not Tuesday or Wednesday and probably not Friday; maybe not at all until we get out there maybe next Thursday.

"Give him another 10 or 11 days and see if we can get that thing completely healed up."

Jacob Mahan replaced Ficociello at second in the series. He finished 3-for-8 at the plate with an RBI.

Ficociello was one of three Arkansas players held out because of injury. Left-handed pitcher Randall Fant suffered a hamstring injury during practice last week, while right-handed pitcher Colby Suggs also suffered an oblique strain.
