Arkansas caught up in 3 spree

FAYETTEVILLE — Arkansas tied a season high with 10 three-pointers in its 86-51 victory over Delaware State on Saturday.

The Razorbacks made 10 of 18 from beyond the arc, 55.6 percent, falling just shy of their season-best three point percentage (58.8) in a 10-of-17 performance against Michigan.

Freshman Anthlon Bell led the way with four three pointers, three in the first half.

BJ Young made both of his three-point attempts, while Fred Gulley, Kikko Haydar and Charlie Henderson were all 1 of 1. Dee Wagner made 1 of 3 from beyond the arc.

Henderson, a walk-on, connected on the 10th and final three-pointer from the left corner with 2:25 remaining for the first points of his career.

Crowd pleaser

Michael Qualls went high on a missed 14-footer by Jacorey Williams in the second half and scored on a two-handed dunk while being fouled by Tyshawn Bell.

Qualls’ second dunk of the game drew perhaps the loudest cheer of the night from the Walton Arena crowd, though Qualls missed the free throw.

Personnel update

Forward Coty Clarke was not on the Arkansas’ bench because of a family emergency.

Arkansas Coach Mike Anderson said after the game that he expects Clarke to be ready to play against Texas A&M on Wednesday night.

Ringing Bell

Anthlon Bell connected on a three-pointer with 6:42 remaining for his fourth three-pointer of the game.

Bell, a freshman, established a career high with the four three-pointers, which tied Marshawn Powell (4 of 6 vs. Oklahoma) and Kikko Haydar (4 of 4 at Michigan) for the team’s single-game high this season.

Three streak

Kikko Haydar hit his only three-point shot - on a pass from Jacorey Williams at the top of the circle - with 9:51 remaining in the first half to continue a sizzling streak.

Haydar has made a three pointer in seven consecutive games, and the junior from Fayetteville is 10 of 14 from beyond the arc in that span.

He has made 11 of 17 (.647) three-pointers this season.

For starters

Delaware State’s starters entered the game averaging a combined 36.3 points, while the Razorbacks’ starters combined to average 54.4 points per game.

Remember Al?

Arkansas improved its record against Delaware State to 5-0. The aggregate point totals of the previous four games was 400-261 for an average score of 100-65.

Perhaps the most significant single-game performance in that span came when guard Al Dillard made an SEC-record 12 three-pointers while scoring 39 points in a 123-66 victory over the Hornets on Dec. 11, 1993. Dillard’s record lasted 16 years.

“It was one of those magical nights,” Arkansas Coach Mike Anderson recalled. “We always talked about his three-point shot was like a layup. ... It was one of those nights if you were here you remember.” Late lead

Arkansas started sluggishly Saturday and did not take a lead until BJ Young converted a three point play with a free throw at the 14:47 mark for a 9-8 lead.

Young’s play was part of a 16-0 run by the Razorbacks that eventually grew into a 34-4 run and a 38-12 advantage.

Delaware State’s 18 first-half points marked a season low for a Razorback opponent, easily beating the 24 points Alcorn State managed in a 97-59 loss Dec. 15. ... Nine of the 10 Razorbacks who attempted a shot in the first half scored, and 13 of the 14 players who dressed out for the game scored. ...
