Georgia cornerback picks Hogs

Wisconsin football earned APR recognition awards from the NCAA in Bret Bielema's final two full years.

Arkansas secured the oral commitment of one of Georgia’s top prospects, cornerback Chris Murphy on Sunday.

Murphy, 5-10, 180, 4.4 seconds in the 40 yard dash, of Marietta, (Ga.) Lassiter High School chose the Hogs over about 20 other scholarship offers, including Missouri, Oklahoma State, Vanderbilt, North Carolina and Purdue. He announced his pledge on Twitter while attending The Clear Vision Clear Dreams Camp in West Palm Beach, Florida.

“I want to say thanks to everyone that’s helped me in this process! I’m proud to announce that I have committed to #Arkansas! #WPS”

He visited Arkansas for the Red-White spring game and that set the wheels in motion for him picking the Razorbacks. National recruiting analyst Tom Lemming of CBS College Sports rates Murphy a 3-star plus prospect which is just step below being a 4-star recruit.

“He’s one of the better all round athletes in the state,” Lemming said. He’s proved he can play cornerback at the next level and shows very good closing speed and does a good job of beating the receiver to the ball. He’s a reliable open field tackler.”

Lemming said Murphy is among the best at his position in the state.

“Georgia is probably the fourth best state in the country for talent,” Lemming said. “This year it’s loaded with wide receivers and corners. It maybe the best state in the country for corners this year. There’s so many of them.”

Murphy, who has recorded a 4.12 pro-shuttle time and 35-inch vertical, recorded 25 tackles, 12 pass break ups, 3 interceptions and 3 recovered fumbles as a junior.

The Hogs now have six commitments for the 2014 class. Oral commitments are nonbinding.
