Minus football, Rogers sees UA as good fit

Zach Rogers was impressive at Arkansas' recent camp.

Recruits often say they look for a college where they would attend if football didn't work out. Junior offensive lineman Zach Rogers believes Arkansas could be that type of school for him.

"Taking football completely out of it I love this area and the town of Fayetteville," said Rogers, who attended Arkansas' prospect camp on Monday. "I think the academic program at Arkansas is a good one. I think if I was just normal student I think I could see myself here definitely."

Rogers, 6-3, 295, 5.06 seconds in the 40 yard dash of Carrollton, Texas, Hebron has scholarship offers from Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Baylor and UCLA. He appreciated the chance to work with offensive line coach Sam Pittman.

"He's a whole lot of fun to work with," Roger said. "I like him he definitely knows what he's talking about The things he was telling me I was doing wrong to fix and we I fixed them I could tell there was difference in the way I was playing."

Rogers, who has recorded a 355 pound bench press and 470 squat, has visited Fayetteville about 12 times since last June's camp.

"We'll probably back up here in July again," he said. "I'm almost sure of that. Texas A&M has a camp in July I might go to but I'm not sure about that yet."

Pittman and offensive coordinator Jim Chaney utilize a combination of sternness and fun when coaching.

"It's always fun to get work done at practice," Rogers said. "I think it makes it easier to come to practice if the coach is having fun. You'll have fun getting the work done. It makes it not so hard to wake up at 6 o'clock in the morning to come out and practice. I definitely think it's a plus."

Rogers admitted in Friday' Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that he's considered committing to the Hogs but isn't ready at this point. He said Monday's camp gave him a good challenge.

"There was definitely a lot of good competition," Rogers said. "When I beat somebody it makes it that more special because you know you beat somebody that's good."

His biggest challenge was from Star City sophomore defensive tackle Austin Capps, who earned a scholarship offer from the Hogs after his performance at the Razorbacks' camp.

"I really didn't know what to think." Rogers said. "I had heard a lot about him. He was very strong. He used his hands well he definitely has a good future ahead of him."
