Offer has QB Cornwell looking harder at Hogs

Quarterback David Cornwell (left) will compete in the National Elite 11 competition.

Arkansas has been a school of interest for quarterback David Cornwell for sometime but a recent scholarship offer from the Hogs has given the signal caller more to think about.

Cornwell, 6-5, 235, 4.9 seconds in the 40 yard dash, of Norman, (Okla.) North High School has approximately 17 scholarship offers, including Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee, Oklahoma State and Notre Dame.

"Arkansas coming and offering shows their level of interest which is great," said Cornwell, who's looking to visit the Hogs during May. "I'll maybe put them on the list, maybe not. I have to do my research and have to take a visit. They definitely have the potential and stature to be in my final decision."

The scholarship offer was extended after offensive coordinator and quarterback coach Jim Chaney watched him throw at his school last Thursday. Cornwell hasn't visited Arkansas' campus but did attend last year's Ole Miss game in Little Rock.

"You can tell people from Arkansas are really genuine people, you see that at the game." he said.

Cornwell, who has visited numerous schools, most recently Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Oklahoma, said he's in the process of narrowing his list with June 1 being a target date for a decision.

"There's no set date obviously in recruiting," Cornwell said. "There's never a set plan. Opportunities come and opportunities pass. So a lot of the smarts ones don't call it recruiting they call it elimination because that's kind of what it is for the school and for you."

Cornwell, who will compete in the Elite 11 Quarterback National Competition this summer, embraces relationships with the college coaches.

"You can't lose a relationship," Cornwell said. "It's always there. They'll always remember you and you'll always remember them . Just say football doesn't work out and you want to be a coach one day you can call these great men of character about a graduate assistant job or something like that."
