Hogs surprise Ramirez with appearance

Arkansas' Head Coach Bret Bielema argues with Casey Moreland, umpire Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, during the second quarter of the game against Ole Miss at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Miss.

A few hours before making a commitment to Arkansas on Monday, Shreveport Evangel defensive back Santos Ramirez was surprised to see Coach Bret Bielema and receivers coach Michael Smith watching practice. Video highlights CLICK HERE

“When I noticed them I was like man, they came all this way to see us practice,” Ramirez said.

Ramirez, 6-2, 180, 4.55 seconds in the 40 yard dash, of Shreveport Evangel picked the Razorbacks over nine scholarship offers including LSU, Baylor, Memphis, Southern Miss and Tulane. The process of him pledging the Hogs got a jump start when he attended the Elite Prospect Camp in July.

“I took a tour of the school and I saw what they had and they were going in the right direction,” Ramirez said. “When Coach Bielema talked to me one-on-one it was awesome. He was explaining to me his plan and that’s really when I considered Arkansas.”

A few weeks after the visit, teammate and receiver Jared Cornelius, who also attended the camp, committed to the Hogs. Bielema impressed Ramirez on a personal level.

“He’s real cool and real comfortable,” said Ramirez, who recorded 76 tackles, four interceptions and 10 pass breakups at Captain Shreve High Schoollast year. “He’s not uptight like all the other recruiters. He wants to get to know us. I like that about him. I feel comfortable around him.”

Ramirez has said he planned to make official visits to Arkansas and LSU. He didn’t rule out a trip to Baton Rouge.

“It’’s not fully out of the picture,” he said. “I don’t know if I’ll schedule a visit or not. It’s possible I might still take a visit, but I’m a hundred percent Arkansas right now.”
