Hog commit sets another national record

Kicker Cole Hedlund, an Arkansas commitment, is expected to take over kicking duties for Hogs next year.

Kicker Cole Hedlund, an Arkansas commitment, set another national record in last night's game.

Hedlund, 5-10, 170 pounds has made 19 of 25 field goals with a long of 57 yards this season and is a perfect 71 of 71 on extra points. He set the national career field goal record of 51 by going five of five Thursday night in the 57-12 victory over Krum.

“He’s the current holder of the national record for field goals in a season by a high school player which is 25,” said Argyle Coach Todd Rogers.

He has the right mental and physical approach.

“He’s a very level headed kid and he’s fierce competitor,” Rogers said. “He worked independently on his on. He knows what it takes to get things done for him to perform at a high level . He’s real committed to the weight room and real committed to conditioning.”

Hedlund is an unselfish teammate, said Rogers.

“I think he gets it,” he said. “He’s committed to what were trying to do and at the end of the day winning is the most important thing. It’s above the records that he’s set or going to set in the future.”

Despite receiving a scholarship offer from Texas A&M, Hedlund has stayed true to his commitment to the Hogs. His focus impresses Rogers.

“I never have to look for him,” Rogers said. “He knows the situation in the game. He’s ready to take the field when I call on him He never has his back turned. Some kids aren’t engaged in the game. he’s always up and ready to go.”

In last week’s 63-13 victory over Celina, Hedlund faced the dilemma every placekicker dreads, a tricky wind that contributed to two missed field goals.

“We had the wind into us little bit of a cross wind and it pushed it out the first time and he compensated the second time and it never blew it in,” Rogers said. “I think that’s indicative of kicking, there’s not much room for error when you start moving the ball out there 40 plus.”
