SEC schools taking notice of Warren receiver
Arkansas Democrat-Gazette/RICK MCFARLAND --09/12/13-- Warren's Darveon Brown (7) intercepts a pass intended for Pulaski Academy's Will Hastings during their game at Joe B. Hatcher Stadium in Little Rock Thursday.
Warren junior receiver Darveon Brown’s talent and play on the field is getting the attention of numerous college coaches, including Arkansas tight ends coach Barry Lunney Jr.
Brown, 5-11, 180, 4.4 seconds in the 40 yard dash, played as a freshman and a sophomore but is flourishing in his third year on the varsity level. Lumberjacks Coach Bo Hembree said it was a just a matter of time before he performed at a high level.
“Physically he had it, it’s just being able to mature and becoming a player in high school,” Hembree said.
Brown has 22 receptions for 370 yards, 6 touchdowns and 11 rushes for 76 yards and 2 touchdowns this season. Auburn Coach Gus Malzahn and Lunney are among the several SEC coaches inquiring.
“Coach Malzhan called last week and Barry calls every week,” Hembree said.
Brown, who has 3 punt returns for 98 yards and a touchdown, visited the Razorbacks during the Texas A&M game. He shined against Pulaski Academy.
“I think he scored four touchdowns,” Hembree said. “He scored like one rushing and I think three receiving. They pretty much knew he was getting the ball and he just made plays.”
The list of former Warren receivers include, Jarius Wright of the Minnesota Vikings and tight end Chris Gragg of the Buffalo Bills along with Greg Childs, who’s on Minnesota’s physically unable to perform list
“You look back and even the great ones here didn’t even play as a sophomore," Hembree said.
Hembree said Brown has the ability to do unique things when the ball is in his hands.
“Every time he does something, he does something special,” Hembree said. “He just has to keep playing the way he’s playing.”
Interest level will likely be going up in the near future.
“We’re getting a highlight film ready for him now to send out,” Hembree said.
The Hogs are also showing interest in junior receiver Jaylon Marshall.
