FAYETTEVILLE Arkansas running back Alex Collins was named the Southeastern Conference's freshman of the week Monday for his performance in the Razorbacks' 31-21 win over Samford.
Collins rushed for 172 yards and his first career touchdown in the win. He was especially instrumental in the fourth quarter, delivering runs of 21 and 55 yards to set up scores after Arkansas fell behind 21-17.
Through two games, Collins is averaging 151.5 yards per game, which leads the SEC and ranks sixth nationally. Both Collins and sophomore running back Jonathan Williams have rushed for more than 100 yards in both games this season for Arkansas (2-0).
The Razorbacks are averaging 312.5 rushing yards per game, which ranks first in the SEC and 11th nationally.
Collins' 172 yards Saturday were the most by an Arkansas freshman since Darren McFadden rushed for 187 yards against South Carolina in 2005.
