Arkansas running back Alex Collins (3) carries the ball through the Southern Mississippi defense Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, during the fourth quarter of play at Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville.
FAYETTEVILLE Arkansas running back Alex Collins was named Southeastern Conference freshman of the week and defensive end Chris Smith was named the league's defensive lineman of the week on Monday.
Collins earned freshman of the week honors for the second straight week after rushing for 115 yards and a touchdown in the Razorbacks' 24-3 win over Southern Miss. The Miami area native became the first freshman in SEC history to rush for more than 100 yards in his first three games and ranks fourth nationally in rushing yards.
Smith recorded three sacks against the Golden Eagles, launching him into first place nationally with 4.5 sacks this season. Smith, a senior, is the second Arkansas player to win SEC defensive lineman of the week honors this season, alongside fellow defensive end Trey Flowers.
