Kebenei named national athlete of the week
Arkansas junior Stanley Kebenei, left, leads Florida senior Mark Parrish, right, in the 5,000 meters final Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, during the Southeastern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville.
FAYETTEVILLE Arkansas' Stanley Kebenei was named national athlete of the week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Monday.
Kebenei, a junior, won the 8K Missouri Southern Stampede in Joplin, Mo. on Saturday with a time of 23:25:75. The Kenya native came in 28 seconds of the second-place finisher, Razorbacks senior Raymond Joseph.
The Razorbacks, ranked No. 5 in last week's USTFCCCA rankings, came in second at the event, one point behind Oklahoma.
“We used today as a glorified training session for our team,” Arkansas coach Chris Bucknam said following the meet. “We had some really good things happen individually today. Stanley put forth an excellent effort today to win the race and I am really proud of Raymond’s performance as well, he has come a long way this past year. Also, Aiden Swain ran really well for us today. The season will start for real for us on October 5, when we will compete at the Chile Pepper Festival.”
The win was Kebenei's second first-place finish of the year. He is the reigning SEC runner of the week.
