“I’m not going to say he’s in that league, but he’s not far off as a high school player,” Cox said. “Shawn’s light bulb came on during his senior year.”
Williams’ has the natural athleticism, but has been able to increase strength in the offseason.
“He didn’t play basketball this year and he concentrated on weights,” Cox said. “He has a shot of going somewhere. He’s 6-3 1/2 and 295 and can dunk a basketball. He has some ups.”
Arkansas, LSU, Missouri and Memphis are showing interest in Williams. He attended LSU’s spring game on Saturday. Cox said the talented prospect has some work to do in the classroom in order to play on the D-I level.
“He’s been playing left tackle the last two years,” Cox said. “He’s been playing a little defense. We’re going to put him at a three technique and see if he can play in the interior of the defensive line and hope he dominates. He should play both ways. He has a shot to be a pretty dominating high school player this year.”
Williams, who plans to attend the Dallas Nike Combine May 3, has benched pressed 290 pounds in recent testing.
“He’s up about 40 or something pounds,” said Cox of Williams‘ bench press. “He’s only 16”.
Cox is also high on sophomore cornerback Lorenzo Watkins.
“He has a chance to be special,” he said.
