— Linebacker Otha Peters is transferring to Louisiana-Lafayette, according to the Lafayette Daily Advertiser newspaper.

Peters who was given his scholarship release from Arkansas earlier this week. Lafayette is about two hours from Peters' hometown of Covington, La.

Arkansas coach Bret Bielema said Wednesday night that Peters was frustrated about his place on the depth chart at middle linebacker and decided to transfer closer to home.

"I totally understand that," Bielema said. "We talked about where he was sitting, where he can go.

"I offered to try him at fullback. That's something he really didn't want to do, but he did try it on Monday morning. It didn't go the way he wanted it to go. He didn't feel good about it, so he's transferring back to home."

Peters will have to redshirt the 2014 season unless he receives a NCAA waiver for immediate eligibility, which is unlikely. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining for the Ragin' Cajuns, a member of the Sun Belt Conference.

Peters struggled with injuries last season, recording nine tackles in seven games. Peters was a freshman all-SEC selection after recording 32 tackles in 2012.
