Florida LB talking to the Hogs

NWA Media/Michael Woods --02/05/2014-- University of Arkansas linebackers coach Randy Shannon talks with reporters following the Arkansas Razorbacks national signing day press conference at the Fred Smith Center in Fayetteville.

— Arkansas might have a shot to get a visit from one of the nation’s top linebacker prospects should the Hogs extend an offer.

Te'Von Coney, 6-1, 222 pounds of Palm Beach Gardens High School in Florida has approximately 30 scholarship offers from schools like Florida, Miami, Alabama, Notre Dame and others. Video highlights CLICK HERE

“If they offer, I’ll definitely will take a look at them,” Coney said. “I’ll talk to my coaches about them and ask around and see what type of program they have. If I get great comments, I’ll try and go some time in late July.”

He recorded 172 tackles as a junior and helped lead his team to the Class 8A state semifinals. The Gators lost to state champion South Dade.

Hog linebacker coach Randy Shannon’s reputation and recruiting style is the main reason for Coney’s interest.

“He’s honest. he’s straight up honest,” Coney said. “He tells you what it is and isn’t trying to give you any BS. Just tells you like it is. He’s a great guy.”

Coney, who’s rated the No. 1 prospect in Palm Beach County by the Orlando Sentinel, said Shannon has spoke well of the opportunity at Arkansas.

“He said it’s a great school and they have a great coaching staff,” Coney said. “They’re building right now and it wouldn’t be bad if I came in there and join the program.”

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Coney announced his Top 10 schools in June and listed Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Miami, North Carolina State, Notre Dame, Tennessee and Central Florida.

The Hogs have several south Florida products on the team, including running back Alex Collins, offensive lineman Denver Kirkland, linebacker Randy Ramsey and cornerback Cornelius Floyd.

“It definitely gives me a heads up that it wouldn’t be bad if I went up there and checked it out,” Coney said. “If some guys from Florida likes it.”
