Robinson wins Frontier League HR derby

Kyle Robinson won the Frontier League home run derby in Sauget, Ill., Tuesday night.

The former Arkansas baseball player his 10 home runs in the first round and five in the second round to advance to the finals.

In the finals, he and Vincent Mejia each hit only two home runs before making the allowable five outs, forcing a sudden death swing-off.

Each player failed to hit a home run on the first pitch, but Robinson connected on his second pitch to win the competition.

He has been one of the best players in the Frontier League, an independent baseball league, this season. At one point, Robinson had a 20-game hitting streak in which he batted .514 with five home runs and 19 RBI. When the streak ended, he had a .428 batting average.

Overall, he is fourth in the Frontier League in batting average (.361) and also has seven home runs and 36 RBI in 50 games.

The Frontier League is the oldest currently running independent baseball league in the country and has had 26 players go on to play in the MLB, the most of any independent league.
