California punter anxious for Arkansas visit

Punter Blake Johnson and his family will arrive in Fayetteville later today for Arkansas’ Elite Camp on Thursday.

“I think the thing I’m looking forward to is meeting the coaches,” Johnson said. “”All of them have been really, really cool and I’m really excited to meet them in person and obviously to see the school. I’m just really excited for the whole thing.”

Johnson, 6-1, 190, of Los Alamitos, Calif., is rated the No. 1 punter in the nation by Chris Sailer Kicking and has scholarship offers from Oregon State, Duke and Colorado. He’s expecting to add an offer from the Hogs during the trip.

“I have to come out to make it official,” Johnson said.

Prior to arriving in Fayetteville, Johnson visited Texas, Tennessee and Duke. He has strong interest in Arkansas.

“Location, it’s in the SEC,” he said. “I’ve always wanted to get out of California and experience something new. That was a big part. It’s a great school, I know that. They have a ton of majors. I don’t know what I want to major in yet, but I was told I would have a bunch of choices and options.”

Johnson, who has a 3.3 grade point average, has been communicating with defensive line and specialists coach Rory Segrest and special teams quality control coach Tanner Burns.

He said the two coaches didn’t have to push the Hogs.

“They really didn’t have to do much convincing,” Johnson said. “I was pretty much on board from day one. I’ve watched a lot of things on Youtube with coach (Bret) Bielema. I was pretty much really excited the first time I got hit up by Tanner Burns.”

Johnson plans to visit LSU after leaving Arkansas. He promised his parents he wouldn’t make his college decision until after the end of July.
