Despite taking a loss in the Detroit Tigers' 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Angels Friday, Drew Smyly did not go home empty handed.

The left-hander dominated the Angels for most of the night, retiring the first 13 batters he faced before giving up a double to Howie Kendrick with one out in the fifth inning.

He still had a shutout after five innings, but three hits in the sixth gave the Angels a 2-1 lead and knocked Smyly out of the game.

The last out he recorded was a strikeout against All-Star center fielder Mike Trout, who is also the favorite to win the American League MVP this season. Smyly also struck Trout out in his first at bat of the game.

The strikeouts book-ended an 11-strikeout night for Smyly, his career high. At one point, the former Arkansas pitcher struck out six consecutive batters.

Trout finished the game 0-for-4, including 0-for-3 against Smyly.

While the effort resulted in a win for the Angels, Trout gave Smyly his jersey, which Smyly thanked him for on Twitter following the three-game sweep of the Tigers Sunday.
