The Oakland Athletics placed outfielder Craig Gentry on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a broken hand.

Gentry suffered the injury Sunday when he tried to lay down a bunt and was hit on the hand with the pitch. However, he did not come out of the game.

He had an x-ray on Sunday, which came back negative, but an MRI on Monday proved he had a broken hand.

"I really didn’t think it was fractured. That’s why I kept playing,” Gentry told SFGate.com. “The MRI was more of a precautionary thing. I really didn’t think there was going to be anything wrong."

This season, Gentry has been the Athletics' best defensive outfielder and base stealer, with a .993 fielding percentage and 18 stolen bases in 19 attempts.

At the plate, he owns a .264 batting average, .326 on-base percentage and .299 slugging percentage. He also has 10 RBI and 35 runs scored in 80 games.
