Stacy Lewis rebounded after two rounds over par to finish second at the U.S. Women's Open at Pinehurst on Sunday.
The world No. 1 women's golfer held a one-stroke lead after the first round, but after shooting a combined 7-over in the second and third rounds, she trailed the leaders by six strokes.
A 4-under 66 final round moved the former Arkansas golfer back to even par in the tournament, but it wasn't enough, as Michelle Wie finished a 2-under to win her first major by two strokes.
“It feels great to finish the way I did.” Lewis said in an NBC interview after the round. “I knew I had to get out early and post a number and make Michelle earn it.”
Wie shot a double-bogey on the 16th hole to fall to 1-under, only one stroke ahead of Lewis, who had completed her round earlier in the day. However, she gained a stroke back with a birdie on the next hole.
Lewis' 66 was tied for the best round Sunday, as she made eight birdies and four bogeys.
