Texas QB attends camp, hopes for offer

Quarterback Brennen Wooten and his family visited Arkansas on Wednesday.

— A strong contingent of junior quarterbacks showed up for Arkansas’ Elite Camp on Thursday and one of the most notable ones, Brennen Wooten was looking to add an offer from the Hogs.

“I’m looking for it, that would be big time for me,” Wooten said. “This is SEC football so this would be a great place to play for me for in trying to make it to the next level. So the would be a big stepping stone for me.”

Wooten, 6-2, 180 pounds, 4.73 seconds in the 40-yard dash, of Marble Falls, Texas, has scholarship offers from Kentucky, Clemson, TCU, Boise State, Tulsa, Akron, Rice and Houston. Video highlights CLICK HERE

He was one of a handful quarterbacks offensive coordinator Jim Chaney was eyeing for a possible future offer.

“I thought I did pretty well,” Wooten said. “We’ll see what coach thought. I learned some new stuff. It was just a good experience.”

As a sophomore, Wooten completed 236 of 374 passes for 3,080 yards, and 30 touchdowns for the Class 4A Mustangs. He also rushed 67 times for 322 yards and 2 touchdowns. He spoke of his strengths.

“I feel like my footwork is very good,” he said. “I have a lot to improve on. I feel like I can make any thrown I need to and also my football IQ for sure in being able to read a defense and make the right decision every play.”

Former Marble Falls coach Todd Dodge left for another job in early May and took most of the coaching staff with him and that led to spring practice being canceled. The large number of college coaches expected to visit the school never showed up and probably cost Wooten a few other offers.

“It was unfortunate that we didn’t have practice,” Wooten said. “We lost a great coach in coach Dodge, but we picked up another great coach and we’re going to have a longer two-a-days this summer. So I think that will be even better. I did miss out more evaluation from other schools, but that’s fine with me.”

He and his parents were able tour the Arkansas campus on Wednesday.

“I love the coaching staff, the facilities are awesome,” Wooten said. “It was just a great experience.”

An offer from the Razorbacks would help their chances for Wooten.

“I’m trying to take all of my visits first,” he said. “Arkansas would be very high on my list if they offered.”
