Bielema helps Dean's decision

Fort Smith Northside defensive end Daytrieon Dean had planned to announce his college decision on June 30. That all changed when he met with Arkansas Coach Bret Bielema on Saturday and committed to the Razorbacks.

“When I sat down and started talking to coach Bielema face-to-face,” said Dean of what changed his mind. “He was asking questions about my grades and my family. Then he started talking about what can happen in the future and I really liked what he was telling me.”

Dean, 6-3, 260 pounds, 4.89 seconds in the 40 yard-dash, recorded 50 tackles, 6 sacks and 1 tackle for a loss despite missing most of two games because of an ankle injury this past season. He picked the Hogs over scholarship offers from Mississippi and Arkansas State. Video highlights CLICK HERE

He said defensive line and specialists coach Rory Segrest rejoiced about the commitment.

“He was happy too,” Dean said. “He gave me a big hug.”

Dean respects Segrest’s resume that includes five seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.

“He’s has experience at all levels of the game,” said Dean, who also was drawing interest from Alabama, Auburn, Oklahoma State, Mississippi State and others. “He knows the game.”

His mother wanted him to take his time with the decision making process, but was on board with his decision after seeing how Arkansas looks out for the student-athlete.

“She gave me the go ahead,” Dean, whose lead recruiter is tight ends coach Barry Lunney Jr.

It was just a matter of time before Dean pledged to the Hogs.

“My heart has always been with the Razorbacks,” he said.
