One of the better defensive playmakers in the state, Fayetteville safety Dre Greenlaw, an Arkansas State commitment, talked to Arkansas Coach Bret Bielema and was told the Hogs are still coming after him during Saturday’s visit.
“He knows that I’m committed to Arkansas State, but he’s going to continue to recruit me hard,” Greenlaw said.
Greenlaw, 6-1, 216, 4.53 seconds in the 40 yard dash, recorded 93 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 3 interceptions and a pass breakup this past season. He'll also play running back for the Bulldogs in the fall. Video highlights CLICK HERE
“I didn’t play running back my sophomore year, but I really like running back,” Greenlaw said. “When I’m at running back I’m a pretty tough guy to bring down.”
Southern Miss, Memphis and Washington State has extended offers while Arkansas and others are showing interest. He’s been working hard to improve his speed.
“I feel like I’ve got my 40 time down a lot so now that I’ve got that down,” Greenlaw said. “I’ve been doing a lot of speed stuff this off-season. Now that I’ve got that down of feel like I can play safety on the college level. I see myself as a nickel type guy linebacker- safety type guy.”
Greenlaw, who scored two defensive touchdowns, plays the ball like it's his.
“If I see the ball, I have a chance to go get the ball,” Greenlaw said. “I just take every chance that I can. Because on defense you don’t score a lot. So whatever I’m in kickoff or punt return, that’s my time to go out and get a couple touchdowns. If I see the ball in the air and I get the ball I’m trying to do my best to go score.”
Greenlaw had a game winning 92 yard kickoff return against Rogers Heritage with 1:49 left in the game to propel Fayetteville to a 28-27 victory in October. The War Eagles kicked the ball away from him until the final minutes.
“When I got it I just started smiling,” said Greenlaw, who also returned a punt for a touchdown. “When I got it I had a good little burst of speed because I’m so excited that I got it. At about the 50 yard line it was just me and the kicker and I was like he’s not catching me this time, no way.”
