Wise out, Gosser to start at catcher

North Little Rock catcher Alex Gosser during practice Wednesday at their field in Burns Park.

— With Blake Baxendale and Jake Wise out with injuries, Arkansas will remove Alex Gosser's redshirt and start the freshman Friday night against No. 20 Texas A&M.

Wise was ruled out Friday afternoon because of a concussion he suffered in Saturday's game against Ole Miss.

Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn had planned to redshirt Gosser this season, but the injuries to Baxendale and Wise forced him to remove the redshirt with only six games left in the regular season.

"He wants to play," Van Horn said. "It's a tough call for me because if I was going to do it, I would have done it 20 games ago. We've been fighting it. It's been strange the way it's all gone down."

Last season, Gosser hit .400 at North Little Rock High School, earning 7A All-State honors and being named to the USA Today All-Arkansas Team. He hit .431 as a junior in 2012 and .337 as a sophomore in 2011.
