Arkansas’ pursuit of the program’s first NCAA men’s golf championship was put on hold for a day as persistent rain suspended first-round play Friday at Prairie Dunes Country Club outside Hutchinson, Kan.
The Razorbacks were among the 15 teams — half the field — that didn’t get to tee off to open the 54-hole stroke play portion of the championship.
The first wave of teams endured three delays that totaled 8 hours and 10 minutes before tournament officials determined at 5:50 p.m. that the course was unplayable. The first round will resume at 7 a.m. Central today.
Oregon was the early leader at 3 under par, with Iowa State and SMU at 2 under, South Carolina at 1 under and Texas at even par. Oregon’s Zach Foushee held the individual lead with a 3 under through six holes, with six players tied at 2 under.
No. 1 seed and defending NCAA champion Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, LSU and Vanderbilt — five of the 10 SEC teams in the field — were among the 15 teams unable to begin play.
The Razorbacks’ lineup consists of seniors Sebastian Cappelen and Blake Biddle and sophomores Kolton Crawford, Nicolas Echavarria and Taylor Moore. Arkansas is paired with 10th seed Houston and 12th seed Alabama-Birmingham for the first two rounds.
