UA student-athlete picked as Rhodes Scholar finalist

University of Arkansas student-athlete Nathanel Franks is a finalist for the Rhodes Scholar program.

A University of Arkansas honors student-athlete has been selected as a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship, the university announced in a statement Thursday.

Nathanael Franks, a Portland, Ore., native, earned a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and physics with a minor in history, according to the university.

He graduated magna cum laude, received an Honors College research grant to complete an honors thesis in chemistry, earned a master of business administration degree and is currently completing a master of accountancy degree, the university said.

Franks, who is a member of the Razorbacks' track & field team, will interview for the scholarship in Seattle, Wash., on Saturday.

If he’s selected as a Rhodes Scholar, he will pursue a master of science in global health science at the University of Oxford in England.

Rhodes Scholars are awarded two years of study at the University of Oxford with the possibility of renewal for a third year.

Franks, who received his bachelor's degrees in only two and a half years, was the recipient of the 2013 John Wooden Citizenship Cup, which recognizes athletes' work outside of sports.
