Arkansas 45, UAB 17

Game sketch

Arkansas running back Kody Walker celebrates following a 5-yard touchdown run during the second quarter of a game against UAB on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014 at Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville.

Why Arkansas won

The Razorbacks were more athletic and ensured the game wasn't close by cutting out the mistakes that have plagued them the last two weeks. Arkansas committed only two penalties and didn't commit any offensive turnovers.

Why UAB lost

The Blazers couldn't convert critical plays early in the game, allowing the Razorbacks to put the game away before halftime. UAB's defense allowed Arkansas to convert five of its first six third down plays and the Blazers' offense failed to score touchdowns twice when it had the ball inside the Razorbacks 10 after halftime.

Offensive Player of the Game

Arkansas running back Jonathan Williams rushed for 153 yards on 18 carries. He scored two touchdowns on a 3-yard run and a 17-yard reception. Williams has rushed for 830 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.

Defensive Player of the Game

Arkansas linebacker Martrell Spaight recorded nine tackles, including one for a loss. . Spaight broke up a pass and won the Crip Hall Award, which is given each year to the outstanding senior in the Homecoming game.

Play of the Game

Arkansas lined up for a field goal in the second quarter, but shifted the formation. Guard Sebasian Tretola took the snap and threw a 6-yard pass to snapper Alan D'Appollonio. It was the first career touchdown pass for Tretola. It was also the first career touchdown for D'Appollonio, who also had a 24-yard reception last season at Rutgers. It was the second time this season the Razorbacks' special teams scored on a trick play. Punter Sam Irwin-Hill ran for a 51-yard touchdown during a game against Texas A&M last month.

Walker finally finds the end zone

It had been more than two years since Kody Walker scored a touchdown entering Saturday's game.

The junior running back broke his draught with a 5-yard run in the final minute of the first half to extend the Razorbacks' lead to 35-0.

Walker began his career with five touchdowns in three games, but missed the final 10 games of his freshman season in 2011 with stress fractures in both shins. He scored a touchdown during the Razorbacks' season opener the next year, but missed 10 more games after he broke his leg during a game against ULM in Little Rock.

The Jefferson City, Missouri native nearly scored two weeks ago in a game against Alabama. After catching a pass, Walker fumbled the ball at the 1-yard line in the Razorbacks' 14-13 loss.

Walker had six carries for 32 yards in the win over UAB. He has rushed 26 times for 130 yards this season.

Special teams struggle

Arkansas' poor special teams play continued Saturday, resulting in 10 points scored by UAB.

Toby Baker had a hanging punt returned 35 yards by J.J. Nelson to the Arkansas 10 in the third quarter. After a series of negative-yard plays and penalties, the Blazers settled for a 47-yard field goal by Ty Long.

Nelson added a 100-yard kickoff return later in the quarter to give UAB its first touchdown of the game.

In the fourth quarter, Arkansas punt returner D.J. Dean attempted to recover a punt he had never touched. UAB recovered the fumble at the Razorbacks 26, but couldn't convert a fourth down from the Arkansas 3.

Demetrius Wilson replaced Dean on the next punt, but he also fumbled the return attempt. Neither team could recover the ball and it was called a touchback.

The Razorbacks' bright spot on special teams was kicker Adam McFain, who started his first game. McFain made a 49-yard field goal and was perfect in six extra-point attempts.

Undefeated Nonconference

Arkansas finished its nonconference games undefeated for the first time since 2011.

The Razorbacks lost nonconference games to ULM and Rutgers in 2012, and to Rutgers last season. Arkansas beat Nicholls, Texas Tech, Northern Illinois and UAB this by a combined score of 219-59 this year.

The nonconference schedule for the Razorbacks next season will include games against UTEP, Toledo, Texas Tech and Tennessee-Martin.

Familiar Face

Maudrecus Humphrey, who began his career at Arkansas, returned to Fayetteville as a senior receiver for UAB.

Humphrey finished the game with 2 catches for 15 yards and a run for minus-4 yards. He has 20 catches for 302 yards this season.

At Arkansas, Humphrey had one reception in two seasons. He was dismissed from the Razorbacks' football team after being arrested on felony burglary charges in 2012.
