D'Appollonio nominated for scholar-athlete award

Arkansas' Alan D'Appollonio is tackled after he caught a pass for a first down on a fake punt during a game against Rutgers on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 at High Points Solutions Stadium in Pisctaway, N.J.

— Arkansas deep snapper Alan D'Appollonio has been named a semifinalist for the 2014 William V. Campbell Trophy, which is given to the nation's top football scholar-athlete.

Nominees for the Campbell Trophy are also eligible to receive one of the National Football Foundation's 16 National Scholar-Athlete Awards. D'Appollonio, a Phoenix native, is a four-year starter for the Razorbacks and is double-majoring in political science and international studies.

"He does everything we ask him to do," Arkansas coach Bret Bielema said of D'Appollonio prior to the season. "The reason you never hear about him is because he doesn't screw up."

D'Appollonio was a 2013 nominee for the Brandon Burlsworth Trophy, which is given to the best college football player that began his career as a walk-on. He was also named the SEC special teams player of the week following a game at Rutgers last September.

Notable past winners of the Campbell Trophy include Danny Weurffel, Peyton Manning and Tim Tebow.
