Wise out to regain top spot

Arkansas defensive end Deatrich Wise watches practice Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014, at Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville.

FAYETTEVILLE -- Defensive end Deatrich Wise, who was dropped to the second team this week, performed in Saturday's second spring scrimmage like someone who wants to get back with the starters.

Granted, Wise was going against the second-team offensive line, but he was dominant with four sacks totaling 27 yards in losses.

"We really challenged him this week," Arkansas Coach Bret Bielema said. "The only person that will limit Deatrich Wise is Deatrich Wise.

"As we go out on the road and recruit defensive ends, you can't get any better than that. He's athletic. He's very, very strong."

Bielema said he hopes working on the second-team served as a wake-up call for Wise, who plays both ends spots.

"That's where he'll stay until everything gets in order," Bielema said. "We don't want to put guys in a position of leadership or a first-string position if we don't know if they're going to do the things we ask them to do on a consistent basis.

"Our coaches know how talented he can be, and hopefully he'll see the light."

The Razorbacks had 14 sacks in 112 offensive plays, including three for 19 yards by redshirt freshman tackle Armon Watts.

"Armon is a very talented player," Bielema said. "He's grown a lot. He's probably put on 20 pounds since he's been here. He's engaged all the time. He's an inside player, but he's really long."

Hatcher back

Keon Hatcher had three catches for 39 yards after missing last week's scrimmage with a bruised knee.

Coach Bret Bielema said he expected Hatcher to be out one to two weeks, but Hatcher returned to practice on a limited basis Thursday and was eager to scrimmage.

"We tried to hold him a little bit, but he just wanted to be out there so bad," Bielema said. "Obviously we're a much better offense with him in there.

"He shows great leadership in the huddle. He made some really nice catches today."

Senior tight end Alex Voelzke, who missed last week's scrimmage with a back injury, returned to practice this week and caught two passes for 17 yards in the scrimmage.

Walker runs a lot

With tailback Jonathan Williams being held out of the scrimmage as a precaution, Alex Collins being limited to six carries and Denzel Evans sidelined by a groin injury, senior Kody Walker was the Razorbacks' leading rusher Saturday with 20 carries for 69 yards.

"Kody probably is one of the unsung heroes," Coach Bret Bielema said. "He doesn't get a lot written about him, but he's a workhorse.

"He's really good in certain short-yardage situations, getting his pads downhill. We'd like to use him more at fullback, but because we were so depleted at at tailback today we didn't get as much work out of him there."

Collins left the scrimmage early with what Bielema described as minor ankle injury, then returned after a few plays.

"I was glad to see him kind of battle through it and come back out there and hopefully teach a little bit of something to himself," Bielema said.

Bielema said Williams is fine physically but that he also will be held out of the Red-White game.

Good moves

Sophomore Khalia Hackett, who moved to middle linebacker from an outside spot, had 11 tackles, including a sack for a 4-yard loss.

Junior linebacker Josh Williams, who moved from the middle to the strongside, had 9 tackles, including 3 for losses of 9 yards.

"Those moves together I think have been a very positive thing," Bret Bielema said.

Santos sick

Redshirt freshman Santos Ramirez, who is battling for a starting safety spot, missed Saturday's scrimmage because he is recovering from the flu. Bret Bielema said he expects Ramierz to return to practice Tuesday.

TV time

The first half of the Red-White game April 25 will be televised by the SEC Network. The game starts at 1 p.m.

Line movement

Freshman Hjalte Froholdt has moved from nose guard to defensive tackle, Coach Bret Bielema said.

Froholdt is working as a second-teamer behind returning junior starter Taiwan Johnson. Sophomore Bijhon Jackson and senior DeMarcus Hodge are working at nose guard.
