Arkansas shuts out South Alabama

Arkansas first baseman Clark Eagan attempts to tag a base runner during the fourth inning of a game Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015, at Stanky Field in Mobile, Ala.

Arkansas got production from the bottom of its batting order and a record night defensively in a 7-0 win over South Alabama on Saturday at Stanky Field in Mobile, Alabama.

The Razorbacks (4-1) recorded 14 hits against the Jaguars. Tyler Spoon, Rick Nomura, Bobby Wernes and Carson Shaddy all had multiple-hit games while batting between the fifth and ninth positions in the batting order.

Shaddy, who made his first career start, had three hits including an RBI single that gave Arkansas a 6-0 run in the eighth inning after an error. Shaddy also threw out a runner in the third inning.

Spoon also had three hits, including an RBI double in the ninth inning to cap the scoring.

The offense and defense came through on a less-than-stellar night for Arkansas pitchers. Starter Zach Jackson labored through three innings, allowing three hits and walking five batters.

South Alabama (4-2) had a base runner in every inning but the ninth. Jackson and Arkansas relievers Jackson Lowery and Lance Phillips combined to walk nine batters.

Freshman Parker Sanburn closed the game, retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth inning.

Arkansas' infield played well behind its pitchers, turning a school record five double plays. The Razorbacks turned a double play in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Arkansas took the lead with a three-run fourth inning. Nomura and Wernes had RBI hits in the inning, and McAfee scored a runner with a fielder's choice.

The Razorbacks extended the lead to 4-0 when Joe Serrano scored on a passed ball in the seventh inning. Serrano walked and advanced on a bunt and a sacrifice fly.

Arkansas will play No. 16 Maryland on Sunday at 10 a.m. The Terrapins dropped their first game of the season Saturday with an 8-7 loss to No. 22 Central Florida.
