Smith signs extension with Arkansas

Arkansas defensive coordinator Robb Smith directs his players as linebacker Alex Brignoni (45) listens during practice Thursday, March 20, 2014, at the UA practice field in Fayetteville.

— Arkansas defensive coordinator Robb Smith has signed a contract extension.

Details of the contract weren't immediately available. Razorbacks head coach Bret Bielema indicated Smith's new contract includes a pay raise.

"I think Robb is very happy," Bielema said. "Robb and I enjoy working together very much."

Smith transformed Arkansas' defense in his first season as coordinator. The Razorbacks improved from No. 76 in total defense the year before to No. 10 in the latest NCAA standings.

Arkansas recorded two shutouts against ranked teams during the regular season and held Texas to 59 yards of total offense in a bowl win.

Smith, 39, was originally under contract through the 2015 season. His annual compensation was worth $500,000 in his first year.

Bielema said Smith will have input on hiring the Razorbacks' new linebackers coach after Randy Shannon accepted a similar position at Florida. Bielema said he will begin interviewing as many as 15 candidates Monday and hopes to have Shannon's replacement named within the next two weeks.

Note: This article originally stated Smith made $550,000 annually. That has been corrected.
